
Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at 1:26 p.m. Afterwards, he was hospitalized at Detroit's Grace Hospital. He was reported to have passed out during the show, but was revived and continued. Despite a diagnosis of acute appendicitis, Houdini took the stage. When Houdini arrived at the Garrick Theater in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1926, for what would be his last performance, he had a fever of 40☌ (104 degrees F).

Although in serious pain, Houdini none-the-less continued to travel, without seeking medical attention. His appendix would most likely have burst on its own without the trauma. Houdini had apparently been suffering from appendicitis for several days prior and yet refused medical treatment. Houdini stated that if he had time to prepare himself properly, he would have been in a better position to take the blows. Whitehead reportedly continued hitting Houdini several times afterwards, and Houdini acted as though he were in some pain.

Houdini's official cause of death was peritonitis (inflammation in the abdomen). Houdini became sick afterwards, but continued to perform. Two weeks before his death, a college student approached Houdini and asked him if he could withstand a punch in the stomach, a challenge which Houdini often took, and the former punched him several times.

Houdini also appeared in several early movies and made many early airplane flights. Mr Beck was impressed with Houdini's handcuff stunts and within a year Houdini was famous. In 1899 his acts got better when he met his manager Martin Beck. At first he did not have much success in his career.
